I had never used a page builder until I took over maintenance of client sites, and encountered many sites that use VC, and a few that use BB. After two years, I still hate having to use VC, and find BB quite pleasant.

The apparent popularity of VC, as far as I can see, is only because it comes packaged with themes (mostly through Themeforest). People just want to buy a pretty theme, they’re not actually choosing a page builder. And, as far as I can see, most of the people buying these themes struggle with making their sites look like the demo that prompted them to buy the theme, mainly because VC (and its various iterations) are so cumbersome to use.

I’m actually at the point now that if a new client wants me to maintain their Themeforest-themed site, I try to talk them into letting me rebuild the site with Beaver Builder. Usually, I can build whole new site faster than I can re-work an existing one that used VC.

As Andrew Peters commented above, an additional benefit is that clients are able to edit their own content in BB much more easily, because: a) BB works on the front end in virtually a WYSIWYG manner; and b) BB’s text editor is almost identical to the post/page editor that they already know from using WordPress.

In short, I think VC is a terrible product that many people are using because they don’t know any better. It’s usually bundled with overbloated themes that contain a lot of code and features that they never use, which slows their websites.

If one must use page builders (which many do, because it lowers development costs considerably, a boon to small businesses), Beaver Builder is, in my opinion, way ahead of VC for usability.
